Dear Mr Reid -

Very many thanks for the care and trouble you have taken -

However I have not sent the pastels to the Champs de Mars[4] after all -

I decided finally not to send anything this time - and the pastels would have been too little - and at the same time too much by themselves! -

I shall have to borrow [p. 2] them again - Meanwhile I am delighted to see them again - and I think I may add a touch or two by way of thanking their owners[5] for their courtesy -

I am busy - and one of these days, may show you something "de très amusant[6]" as they say - rather carelessly here -

Possibly James Carfrae Alston (1835-1913), collector[more], and William Burrell (1861-1958), ship-owner and collector [more], who bought these pastels at some time in the 1890s.
