J'ai l'honneur de vous faire part que, dans sa dernière séance, le comité a voté à l'unanimité votre participation à l'Exposition. Quoique j'aie su que vous en aviez été informé déjà, je vous donne ici avis officiel du vote. Comme condition, vous devez savoir que la cotisation de [p. 2] chaque artiste exposant a été fixée à 500 francs - L' Exposition[3] ouvrirait le 15 mai prochain environ.

Je vous prie de vouloir bien m'adresser, pour la forme, votre acceptation, et d'agréer mes plus empressées salutations

Mr Whistler

I have the honour to tell you that, at their last meeting, the committee voted unanimously for your participation in the Exhibition. Although I know that you have already been told about it, I herewith give you official notice of the vote. One condition, you should know that the registration of each artist exhibiting was fixed at 500 francs - The exhibition will open about 15 May next.

I would be grateful if you could let me have, for the form, your acceptance, and accept my sincerest greetings on behalf of the committee.

Notes:

1.  Galerie Georges Petit
The gallery, run by Georges Petit (1856-1920), Paris art dealer [more], was a family business, and held a series of International exhibitions in which the Impressionists joined with artists from Europe and America, as well as one-man shows (Monet held one in 1887).

2.  A. BESNARD
The committee consisted of Paul Albert Besnard (1849-1934), painter, graver and writer [more], Stanislas Henri-Jean Charles Cazin (1841-1901), painter and ceramicist [more], Albert Gustaf Aristides Edelfelt (1854-1905), artist [more], Rogelio de Egusquiza Barrena (1845-1915), painter and printmaker [more], Claude Monet (1840-1926), artist [more], Jean François Raffaëlli (1850-1924), artist [more], Pierre Auguste Renoir (1841-1919), painter [more], and René François Auguste Rodin (1840-1917), sculptor [more]. Monet was JW's principal contact.

3.  Exposition
JW exhibited fifty oils, watercolours and pastels, the largest and most important showing of his work in France.
