Cher Maitre -
I know I ought to write you - though why - for I haven't heard from you for years - or less I dont know. But Mrs Pennell[2] tells me you had a momentary thought of not sending to the Show[3]. That would be really too dreadful - and it cant be so. For it seems to me that this is really [p. 2] a critical period for us - and if by any chance you did not, I know what a fuss the critical ones will make, and not only that, but ever more important, the people wont come - and this year when [we?] are really starting we must be all there, at least this is my view of it. But maybe it is all a mistake, for for we must disarm the enemy and you are the one to do it. and you can and will So do! I congratulate you on Buffalo[4] [p. 3] They have kicked me there - but I think I[']m going to have some fun with them.
There is nothing very exciting here save the place - that is better than [ever?] as to people - There are [visions?] of Hop Smith[5] like this
[drawing of an artist painting at an easel on a Venetian quay with a crowd watching]
doing a little water cooler on the Riva [p. 4] and Woods[6] in solemn grandeur may be seen at 8 30 and of at Quadri, a host in himself and by himself. Rico[7] and Van Haemen[8] are here somewhere. but no Christians save Bunce[9] and a little no he aint little Henry Simpson[10] - who is most devoted and we talk of you no end. I've no idea when I shall get back. So you must console Mrs P and send. please do.
yours
Joseph Pennell
