May 26th 1898.
Dear Mr. Webb.
Mr. Whistler, who is very busy has asked me to write, and forward you the enclosed letter from Mr. Reid[4] which came last evening. He thinks that your letter[5] has probably caused this reply and that all further communications had better be made by you. (You are to notice Reid's letter is dated 20th May & the postmark bears the "24th"). [p. 2] Mr Whistler thinks it is strange that if no agreement has been made about the purchase of the "Fur Jacket"[6] Mr. Burrell[7] should possess it, so much so, that the International Society[8] had proposed borrowing it at one moment for exhibition
He thinks perhaps as Mr. Burrell has had other pictures from Mr. Reid he would be willing to screen him; but he leaves you to decide on the next step to be taken in the matter.
I think this was all.
With kindest regards.
Yours sincerely.
R. Birnie-Philip.
