Mon cher Whistler

Depuis mon retour je n'ai eu que des ennuis pour notre exposition^[2]. Je vous ai télegraphié^[3] que je n'exposai pas chez Durand, je n'ai pu m'entendre avec lui et je crois qu'il est preferable d'attendre au commencement de l'hiver, car une exposition baclée à la hate chez Durand pourrait être nuisible[.] Bref j'y renonce positivement Petit^[4] [p. 2] m'offrant de me louer sa galerie (moi seul responsable) pour octobre ou novembre. Je vous ai de nouveau télegraphié ce matin en aprenant [sic] qu'on se servait de mon nom pour faire quand même une exposition chez Durand mais comme on n'a pas le droit d'exhiber de mes tableaux dans une exposition payante sans mon consentement, et que je m'y oppose formellement j'ai cru devoir vous en prevenir afin que vous ne soyez pas trompé et pensant qu'il vous [p. 3] sera plus agreable d'exposer avec moi, mais cependant si vous avez envie d'exposer chez Durand ne croyez pas que je cherche à vous influencer, je veux seulement qu'il n'y ait pas surprise. repondez-moi de suite un mot, n'est ce pas.

My dear Whistler

Since my return I have had nothing but trouble with our exhibition. I telegraphed you that I was not exhibiting at Durand's, I could not come to an understanding with him and I think it is preferable to wait until the beginning of the winter, because an exhibition cobbled together in haste at Durand's could be harmful[.] In brief I am definitely giving up Petit [p. 2] offering to rent me his gallery (me solely responsible) for October or November. I telegraphed you again this morning when I heard that they were using my name to do an exhibition nevertheless at Durand's but as they have not the right to show my pictures in a paying exhibition without my consent, and as I am formally opposing it I thought I had better inform you so that you will not misunderstand and thinking that it would be more agreeable to you to exhibit with me, but nevertheless if you wish to exhibit with Durand do not think that I am seeking to influence you, I only want there to be no surprises. send me word immediately if you will.

It was planned to open the Exposition, Galerie Durand-Ruel, Paris, 1888 on 20 May. See P. Durand Ruel to JW, #00978, #00979. JW does not seem to have been worried by the haste with which the exhibition was organised and he sent a number of works including nocturnes, etchings and drawings. One of these seems to have been Nocturne: Blue and Silver - Bognor (YMSM 100).
