Feb. 22 / 89,
Sometime ago, thinking that you were on the Continent, we sent to your Private Secretary a proof of "The little lagoon" for signature, as the owner had lost the original signature in some way.
We have not heard about it since but trust that it has reached you in safety. Should you have any objection to signing it, kindly return it to us. In any case please return it at your early convenience as the owner would like to have it again. The gallery is completely changed for your exhibition, and the arrangement extremely pretty. It is unfortunate that you are [p. 2] not here, but we trust to have the pleasure of seeing you some time on this side of the Atlantic. We presume that the balance of the pictures have been shipped by this time and we await their arrival eagerly, as all the frames, and in fact everything else is ready. The exhibition will be a great success.
We are Sir;
H. Wunderlich & Co.
J. McNeill Whistler Esq.
'Notes' - 'Harmonies' - 'Nocturnes', H. Wunderlich and Co., New York, 1889. The rooms were decorated in white and yellow, as in JW's exhibition in Mr Whistler's Etchings, The Fine Art Society, London, 1883.
