Votre aimable lettre vient justement me trouver quand j'étais en route pour voir Mr. Ionides^[2]. Je trouve la collection admirable et je ferai mon possible pour lui aider à la vendre. J'avais aussi le grand plaisir d'admirer ce qu'il possède de votre main - une main que ^je continue d'aimer avec un vrai amour.

J'ai beaucoup regretté que le résultat pratique de votre superbe exposition d'Hambourg^[3] n'était plus grand, quant à celui qui a acheté votre aquarelle^[4] - "the bold man" comme [p. 2] vous le nommez - il n'a pas été audacieux, mais amoureux d'art et intelligent. Je crois sûrement que l'année prochaine il trouvera des imitateurs (si vous daignez encore une fois envoyer des oeuvres)

Quant au nombre des eaux-fortes et litographies la personne que j'avais spécialement en vue était absente. C'est dommage; mais si vous permettez je ferai maintenant la tentative et si vous avez encore le packet ensemble et que vous voulez bien me le confier encore une fois, peut-être j'arriverai. Veuillez bien m'écrire sur ce sujet à mon adresse d'Hambourg où je serai de retour à la fin de cette semaine; je tiens à vous épargner tous les soins (d'empacketage etc.) et je vous prierai seulement d'envoyer le packet comme il est (ou les packets) à l'emballeur E. Petit^[5], 6, rue Lamartine, un emballeur très sûr, avec l'ordre qu'il les envoie à mon adresse.

Je suis très heureux de votre nouvelle que vous aurez [p. 3] bientôt. - 300 guineas - tableau. Je vous prie seulement de bien vouloir m'annoncer auparavant la date parceque cette personne n'est maintenant pas à Hambourg.

Je vous félicite de plein coeur de votre succès du Salon^[6]! J'ai vu votre nom salué partout. Dites donc, n'y a-t-il pas aucun moyen d'avoir ce petit portrait tout à fait charmant de la femme assise que j'ai tellement admiré dans votre atelier? le petit portrait en largeur^[7]?

Je change d'opinion sur l'envoi des eaux-fortes. Vous serez gêné tout de même en envoyant le packet chez Petit. Du moment que vous m'aurez écrit que vous per[p. 4]mettez qu'on prend le packet je chargerai Petit qu'il envoie prendre le packet dans la rue du Bac 110^[8].

Your amiable letter has in fact just reached me on my way to seeing Mr Ionides. I find the collection admirable and I will do what I can to help him sell it. I also had the great pleasure of admiring what he possesses by your hand - a hand that I continue to love with a true love.

I very much regretted that the practical outcome of your superb exhibition in Hamburg was not greater, with regards to the buyer of your water-colour painting - "the bold man" as you call him - he was not audacious but an art-lover and intelligent. I firmly believe that next year others will follow suit/ his example (should you deign to send the works again)

With regards to the numerous etchings and lithographs, the person I had particularly in mind was absent. It is a shame; but if you permit I will make an attempt now and if you still have the package together and you are willing to entrust me with it once again, perhaps I will succeed. Please write to me on this subject at my address in Hamburg to whence I will return at the end of this week; I am concerned with saving you all the trouble (of packaging etc.) and I will request only that you send the packet as it is (or the packets) to the packer E. Petit, 6, rue Lamartine, a very reliable packer, with the order that he send them to my address.

I am very happy about your news that you will soon have 300 guineas for the painting. I request only that you kindly inform me in advance of the date because this person is no longer in Hamburg.

I congratulate you wholeheartedly for your success at the Salon! I saw your name acclaimed everywhere. Pray tell, is there no means of having that absolutely charming little portrait of the seated woman that I so admired in your studio? The narrow little portrait?

PS. Would it not be possible that you make a copy of your little seated woman for the 300 guineas??

I have changed my mind about the dispatch of the etchings. You will be inconvenienced all the same sending the packet to Petit’s. As soon as you have sent me your written permission for the packet to be taken I will charge Petit to send for the packet at 110 rue du Bac.
