1.  H. Faraday
Faraday and Son were manufacturers of chandeliers, lamps, etcetera, at 3 Berners Street, off Oxford Street. The letter, discussing the printing of an advertisement or catalogue, has nothing to do with JW. It has been torn in half and used as scrap paper.

2.  Thomas Way
Thomas Way (1837-1915), lithographic printer [more], had taught JW the basic techniques of lithography in 1878, and printed several of his pamphlets and catalogues. They might, at this date, have been discussing either Whistler, James McNeill, The Piker Papers. The Painter-Etchers' Society and Mr. Whistler, London, 1881, or Whistler, James McNeill, Correspondence. Paddon Papers. The Owl and the Cabinet, London, [1882].

4.  The Little White Girl
The text on p. 3 was written by JW. The paintings listed are Symphony in White, No. 2: The Little White Girl (YMSM 52), Blue and Silver: Blue Wave, Biarritz (YMSM 41), Symphony in White, No. 3 (YMSM 61), probably Caprice in Purple and Gold: The Golden Screen (YMSM 60), Purple and Rose: The Lange Leizen of the Six Marks (YMSM 47), Arrangement in Grey and Black: Portrait of the Painter's Mother (YMSM 101), Harmony in Grey and Green: Miss Cicely Alexander (YMSM 129), an unidentified Nocturne, The Last of Old Westminster (YMSM 39), Variations in Flesh Colour and Green: The Balcony (YMSM 56), Brown and Silver: Old Battersea Bridge (YMSM 33), Sea and Rain (YMSM 65), either Blue and Silver: Trouville (YMSM 66) or Crepuscule in Opal: Trouville (YMSM 67), possibly Crepuscule in Flesh Colour and Green: Valparaiso (YMSM 73), and finally Symphony in Grey and Green: The Ocean (YMSM 72). These included some of the most important of JW's oils and may have been intended for an exhibition. However, as far as is known, none were exhibited until 1883 when Brown and Silver: Old Battersea Bridge (YMSM 33) and one of the Trouville oils were sent to Exposition Internationale de Peinture, Galerie Georges Petit, Paris, 1883.

5.  Lange Lize
The text is surrounded by sketches of 6 pictures: Purple and Rose: The Lange Leizen of the Six Marks (YMSM 47), Harmony in Green and Rose: The Music Room (YMSM 34), Caprice in Purple and Gold: The Golden Screen (YMSM 60), possibly La Mère Gérard (1) (YMSM 26), Blue and Silver: Blue Wave, Biarritz (YMSM 41). There is also a sketch of Sir Henry ('King') Cole (1808-1882), civil servant and museum director [more]. This was probably done in 1881 for he died on 18 April 1882; see Sir Henry Cole, and a list of pictures (M.839).

6.  Swinburne
Algernon Charles Swinburne (1837-1909), poet and critic [more].

7.  Peter
