Ernest Gillonneau, secretary to the Beaux-Arts Exposition, Paris.
2. Seule
The Coast of Brittany (YMSM 37) was exhibited in [Exposition], Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, Paris, 1861, as 'Seule', its full alternative title being 'Alone with the Tide'.
3. enfant
This could have been Annie (K.10) or Annie, Seated (K.30), which date from 1858-1859, but is more likely to have been Bibi Valentin (K.50) or Bibi Lalouette (K.51)), both of which date from 1861.
4. Tamis
Some of JW's Thames etchings were exhibited at Martinet's gallery in Paris in January 1862. They were praised by Baudelaire in 'L'eau-forte est à la mode' in La Revue anecdotique, 2 April 1862 (unsigned), and a further version of the same text in 'Peintres et aquafortistes'; he commented that JW's etchings were 'subtiles' and evoked the 'poésie profonde et compliquée d'une vaste capitale' (Oeuvres complètes, NRF Gallimard, 1954, ed. Y-G Le Dantec, p. 847). A Series of Sixteen Etchings of Scenes on the Thames, 1871 (the 'Thames Set') (K.38-44, 46, 52, 66, 68, 71, 74-76, 95) (excat 4) was published as by F. S. Ellis.
