April 27th 99

Dear Mr. Whistler,

We have got the Sea piece[2] and I have written Cowan[3] for the Shop Nocturne[4][.] May we photograph any of them for the Catalogue?

You will see from the report on the Shannon[5] affair that he desires that we should settle the matter at once. We are anxious to get the Exhibition[6] open first and deal with [p. 2] the question afterwards there being so much to attend to in such a very short time and we require all hands on deck. I think Shannon will behave nicely and only desires that he should be put right with you.

The admiral[7] feels very strongly about Mempes[8] [sic] and we are not likely to get any concessions [p. 3] other than stated in our agreement with him. We are now trying to get him to agree to the small additional expense of the 5-9 Burlington band of a darker colour to run round the Galleries and other little finishing touches such as varnishing the dado staining the floor etc.

The B. A. Secretary you spoke of; Ludovici[9] says has retired from business.

We begin hanging on Saturday.

Many thanks for your kindness on Sunday last.

Yours sincerely

John Lavery
