Your letter[3] followed me here -
I do not understand why you say no more in it - From what Mr. Kennedy[4] told me, I should certainly have supposed that there was no question of further exhibition - and that all my unsold pictures would immediately be returned to me - When therefore I come upon a paragraph in the papers commenting upon the Whistler exhibition in Detroit[5] (of which apparently [I am] the only interested person still in complete ignorance), I [p. 2] I [sic] am spared the humiliating spectacle of a believing people! -
