Duret carried a 'domino', a flesh-coloured silk cloak, to pose for his portrait, Arrangement en couleur chair et noir: Portrait de Théodore Duret (YMSM 252). It was started in 1883, rejected at VIII Summer Exhibition, Grosvenor Gallery, London, in 1884, reworked during June 1884, and finally exhibited in the 103rd exhibition, Ouvrages de peinture, sculpture, architecture, gravure et lithographie des artists vivants, Palais de Champs Elysées, Paris, in 1885.
