I need not say that I don't think much of your appreciation & description of the pictures! -
This bit of a scratch between cocktails at the Chatham[3] was scarcely the report of the visit to the Salon[4]!
Nothing but the finger marks on the glasses do you seem to have brought away with you! - Now I had [p. 2] already heard of this from Vanderbilt[5], who doubtless spoke of them to you when you went to ask about the photographing business! -
It would have been simpler to have called a gardien in the Gallery and given him a couple of francs to have at once wiped the glasses and frames & so have had it over then & there - without a word more about it - You might have even devoted a fine cambric handkerchief for the final polish, and so have been in the history yourself & have won my warm & official thanks for your promptness & presence of mind -
However I have written as I told Vanderbilt - so thats all right - and I am sorry that Madame Sindici[6], who is always so charming & to whom I beg to send mes homages respectueux[7] together with my thanks, should have been so disturbed by your account - -

12th Exhibition, Ouvrages de Peintures, Sculpture, Dessin, Gravure, Architecture et Objets d'Art, Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, Paris, 1902, which opened on 21 April; JW showed several paintings including Ivoire et or: Portrait de Madame Vanderbilt (YMSM 515) and Rose et or: La Tulipe (YMSM 418).
5. Vanderbilt
George Washington Vanderbilt (1862-1914), collector [more]. JW had sent Ivoire et or: Portrait de Madame Vanderbilt (YMSM 515) to the Salon, to surprise the Vanderbilts on their arrival from America. JW had also, as he told Heinemann, written to Vanderbilt about the finger prints on the glass (R. B. Philip to G. Vanderbilt, 1 May 1902, #04836; see also JW to R. Canfield, #03049 and #09044).
