Dear Sir -

In answer to your kind and courteous letter[4], I beg that you will present my most distinguished compliments to his Excellency the Sydico of Venice, and say that long absence from Paris, and much travelling, have prevented my writing in acknowledgement of the honour conferred upon me at the Exhibition.

I am anxious that his Excellency should know that I am highly sensible of this most flattering testimonial if sympathy [p. 2] coming to me from Venice the Beautiful!

I would further take this occasion to ask you to convey also my thanks and my appreciation to the Gentlemen of the Committee -

And I have, dear Sir,
the honour to be
Your obedient Servant

J. McNeill Whistler
