Dear Mr Spielman [sic] -
You are quite right in supposing that I do not look upon you as one of the "unattached" - and with pleasure will I tell you any thing that can be at all worth the while of either yourself or Mr Morley[3] -
But first you must forgive my not answering your notes[4] before - and then you must not come to me just yet - I am [p. 2] terribly busy!!! -
My picture for the Salon you know - It has gone - the Sarasate[5] - This I say in case you are to speak of Paris -
The Suffolk Street[6] I am not yet settled about - but as soon as possible I will send for you - and then I will try and give you a sketch -
My own exhibition[7] will take place at Messrs Dowdeswell's - and of that you shall have plenty of details - and perhaps a little sketch or two - but I dare not promise for I am so awfully pressed -
In any case tell Mr Morley, with my compliments, not to nagg [sic] at me - but to take it out of Walter Sickert[8] if he feel that way inclined!! -

Marion Henry Alexander Spielmann (1858-1948), journalist and writer on art [more], was then art critic for the Pall Mall Gazette. He later became editor of the Magazine of Art.

6. Suffolk Street
The Spring exhibition at the Society of British Artists, 63rd Annual Exhibition, Society of British Artists, London, 1886. JW eventually sent just one work, Harmony in Blue and Gold (YMSM 197), (cat. no. 298).

'Notes' - 'Harmonies' - 'Nocturnes', Second Series, Messrs Dowdeswell, London, 1886. The works included 75 oils, watercolours, pastels and drawings and a catalogue designed by JW. The preview took place on 29 April.
8. Walter Sickert
Walter Richard Sickert (1860-1942), artist and writer on art [more]. Between 1882 and 1892, Sickert promoted the cause of JW's art 'with some obstinacy' (as he put it) in the press.
