[circular stamp[3]:] ROYAL COMMISSION CHICAGO EXHIBITION 1893
SOCIETY OF ARTS,
JOHN ST., ADELPHI,
LONDON. W. C.
July 13th 1892.
Dear Mr. Whistler,
I called at your house the other day hoping to see you on the subject of the Chicago Exhibition[4], but I did not find you at home. I now write to express the hope of Sir Frederick Leighton[5] and the Fine Arts Committee that you will be able to contribute to the British Section; and I shall be much obliged if you will fill in the enclosed form with the particulars of such works as you would like to represent you. Amongst them I should very much like to get your portrait of Carlyle[6], and if you approve, I would ask Sir Frederick Leighton to make application for it.
I am,
Yours faithfully
J. W. Beck
Secy.
The Fine Arts Committee.
J McNeil [sic] Whistler Esq.
