Cher Monsieur Ephrussi -
J'ai recu votre charmante lettre[3] - et depuis lors je me suis occupé de l'encadrement et l'emballage de mon tableau[4], auquel vous avez temoigné un interet si flateur. -
Je crains que vous ne soyez désapointé - car notre ami Duret[5] et [sic] si indulgent qu'il vous aurait sans doute fait attendre quelque chose de plus important.
Enfin la Maison Goupil[6] s'est chargé du transport et le tableau devrait arriver demain à Paris -
Je serai charmé de savoir que vous ayez pris la [p. 2] peine d'aller le decouvrir chez les Goupil avant la livraison au Palais de l'Industrie -
De cette façon je sentirai qu'il n'est pas absolument à l'étranger sans amis - et je me permettrai de vous le recomander à votre sympathie et protection -
Un petit mot de votre part me disant que vous avez trouvé le temps de l'aller voir, me ferait grand plaisir -
J[e] crains un peu pour le cadre qui a été fraichement peint - et la toile même pourrait se trouver dans une mauvaise condition[7] - vu que je l'avais mal vernis et par ce temps humide le vernis a pu se couvrir de ce que nous appellons en Anglais "bloom" - c'est à dire une espèce de buée bleuâtre qui détruit pour le moment la transparence du fond -
Il serait nécessaire de, doucement et avec grand soucis, frotter la surface avec un vieux foulard de soie - et plus tard - si finalement cet "Arrangement en Noir" est reçu au Salon, de lui faire, au dernier moment avant l'ouverture, donner une belle couche de vernis. -
De tous ces details il est probable que Mons. Goupil se chargerait - mais j'ose vous les expliquer pour que vous puissiez comprendre mon inquiétude en vous faisant voir mon tableau dans sa presente condition.
J'espère bientôt passer à Paris où je viendrai vous remercier de l'aimable interet que vous me temoignez, et de [p. 3] toutes les courtoisies que j'ai reçu de votre part et de la part de votre frère[8] - auquel j'offre milles amitiés -

Dear Mr Ephrussi -
I have received your charming letter - and since then I have been busy with the framing and packing of my picture, in which you have evinced such a flattering interest.
I fear that you might be disappointed - because our friend Duret is so kind that he will doubtless have made you expect something more impressive.
Well the Goupil House is dealing with the transport and the picture should arrive in Paris tomorrow.
I would be very happy to know that you have taken the trouble to go and find it at Goupil's before its delivery to the Palais de l'Industrie -
In this way I will feel that it is not absolutely alone without friends - please allow me to recommend it to your sympathy and protection -
A note from you telling me that you have found the time to go and see it, would give me great pleasure -
I am a little concerned about the frame which has been freshly painted - and even the canvas could be found in bad condition - since I varnished it badly and in this humid weather the varnish could have been covered in what we call "bloom" in English - that is a kind of bluish bloom which can temporarily destroy the transparency of the background -
It would be necessary to rub the surface gently and with great care with an old silk scarf - and later - if this "Arrangement in Black" is finally accepted at the Salon, to give it a good coat of varnish at the last moment before the opening.
It is probable that Mr Goupil will deal with all these details - but I venture to explain them to you so that you can understand my concern that you should see my picture in its present condition.
I hope to visit Paris soon where I shall come and thank you for the kind interest you have shown me, and for [p. 3] all the kindnesses which I have received from you and from your brother - to whom I send my kindest regards -
