Dear Mr Whistler,
I now send you the photograph[4] of the hanging committee.
I find I misunderstood Frazer's[5] letter with reference to the illustrated catalogue. He said that the offending plate would be removed and another substituted, by which I though[t] another photo of your picture. It appears however the publishers have taken out "The Fur Jacket" as you wished and [six illegible words] say that the man who did the plate by the[ir] process they have must ha[ve] tried to improve the outline, but it was without their knowledge.
We are doing well with the Exhibition. I sold Keeley Halswelles[6] and Mrs De Morgans[7] pictures yesterday. The attendance is specially good.
Most truly yours,
Charles Dyall.

4. photograph
The photographs in question were of the Hanging Committee of 21st Autumn Exhibition of Pictures, Corporation of Liverpool, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, 1891, taken in Room I, with the main picture visible on the line behind them being J. Finnie, Pastures Green and Quiet Waters (z254) (cat. no. 180, price £250.0.0.) by John Finnie (1829-1907), landscape painter and printmaker [more]. Whistler's choice was the photograph in which top hats were held rather than worn, and where he is at a little further distance from the group than in the other photograph surviving. More importantly to Whistler, the photograph of Arrangement in Black and Brown: The Fur Jacket (YMSM 181), in the catalogue was not what it should be.
