Dear Sir -

The first pamphlet of the "brown paper" series was called "Whistler versus Ruskin, Art & Art Critics[3]" - It was published by Chatto & Windus - and is at this moment out of print -

You would be able to see it in the British Museum - where Mr. Fagan[4] in the Print room would gladly show it to you if you mention my having written to you about it -

[p. 2] It was published at a shilling - and some time ago Mr Chatto[5] told me, [the?] was fetching a guinea in the market -

Besides these two, there have been several small catalogues[6] of the same pamphlet form -

One of them I have great pleasure in sending you herewith -

Very faithfully

J McNeill Whistler

Notes:

1.  [November 1888/1892]
Dated from address: JW moved to the Tower House, 28 Tite Street, after his marriage in August 1888. JW appears to have met Dixon about that time. The letter may date from about November 1888, when Dixon apparently came to dinner (see #09055).

2.  Frederick Dixon
Frederick Dixon (d. 1923), teacher and editor of the Christian Science Monitor [more].

3.  Whistler versus Ruskin, Art & Art Critics
Whistler, James McNeill, Whistler v. Ruskin: Art and Art Critics, London, 1878 (see Getscher, Robert H., and Paul G. Marks, James McNeill Whistler and John Singer Sargent. Two Annotated Bibliographies, New York and London, 1986, A. 3).

4.  Mr. Fagan
Louis Alexander Fagan (1845-1903), diplomat, writer on art, amateur artist, assistant in the Department of Engraving at the British Museum [more].

5.  Mr Chatto
Andrew Chatto (1840-1913), publisher [more].

6.  several small catalogues
For example, the catalogues for Mr Whistler's Etchings, The Fine Art Society, London, 1883, and 'Notes' - 'Harmonies' - 'Nocturnes', Second Series, Messrs Dowdeswell, London, 1886. If this letter is from a slightly later date, then the reference might encompass the catalogue for Nocturnes, Marines and Chevalet Pieces, Boussod, Valadon & Cie, Goupil Gallery, London, 1892.
