Dear Mr Canfield -

The messenger came all right - and thank you so much - -

You will be pleased to read the telegram that arrived from Johnston^[4] - It was to him that I wrote tonight - [p. 2] for it occurred to me that after all perhaps my kind confrêres have been using their judgement with the best intentions to please me!? - and so I had better wait further information -

In reading the telegram, you will remember that mine to Johnston was: Wire if you think Vanderbilt portrait^[5] looks "skyed". —

You had better go and see the "New English Art Club"^[6] - tomorrow -

You remember I told you about it - You shall report your impressions on Monday -

I enclose solemn and portentious [sic] utterances from Saturday Review which you might refer to in Gallery! -

English Art Club exhibition, Egyptian Hall - Piccadilly -

I shall read the Times!

JW had told Canfield that he was sending Ivoire et or: Portrait de Madame Vanderbilt (YMSM 515) to the 12th Exhibition, Ouvrages de Peintures, Sculpture, Dessin, Gravure, Architecture et Objets d'Art, Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, Paris, 1902 (cat. no. 1193) (#03049). The exhibition opened on 21 April 1902.

6.  'New English Art Club'
A critic commented that their annual exhibition was dominated by the work of Philip Wilson Steer (1860-1942), painter [more] (see Sickert, Oswald, 'The Twenty-Seventh Exhibition of the New English Art Club', Studio, vol. 24, no. 106, January 1902, pp. 263-68).
