Dear Whistler -

There are some more queries raised by the Underwriters about the two "Chapman"[2] pictures -

You had better come down and see me -

In haste

Notes:

1.  Walter Dowdeswell
Walter Dowdeswell (1858-1929), art dealer [more].

2.  Chapman
Alfred Chapman (1839-1917), engineer and collector [more]. Chapman had agreed to lend Nocturne: Blue and Silver - Bognor (YMSM 100) to the Exposition, Galerie Durand-Ruel, Paris, 1888. See A. Chapman to Dowdeswell & Dowdeswell, #00582. However, there seems to have been some difficulty arranging insurance cover whilst the picture and another work (Nocturne: Grey and Gold - Chelsea Snow (YMSM 174), bound for Munich) were in transit. See correspondence including A. Chapman to JW, #00578; #00579; #00580. The pictures were eventually insured with Lloyd's for £350 apiece (A. Chapman to Dowdeswell & Dowdeswell, #00582).
