Statement of Defence
delivered the sixth day of December 1877 by Messrs Walker Martineau and Company of No. 13 Kings Road Grays Inn in the County of Middlesex Defendants Solicitors. -
1 The Defendant admits the allegation contained in paragraph 3 of the Statement of Claim subject to the production at the Trial by the Plaintiff of a Copy of the said Pamphlet[5] for reference
2 The alleged libel is privileged as being a fair and bonâ fide criticism upon a painting[6] which the Plaintiff had exposed for Public view. -
3 Save as aforesaid the Defendant denies the allegations in paragraphs 3 and 5 of the Statement of Claim. -
