Dear Mr Hanson -
I enclose cheque for £5 - which I first inadvertently crossed, but as you see I scratched the lines & initialled them - In case there were any misunderstanding at the Bank you can show this letter -

I wrote to Capt. McEvoy[3] the other day - I suppose he got the letter all right - you might ask him -
[p. 2] About the Grafton Gallery[4]. - It is not as though I were in town - However you can try the card I send.
You might send me any details that Mr Joubert[5] can give you of the model[6] whom he saw in Paris, or of whom he heard, who was calling herself by a name to which she had no right - Who was the painter to whom she sat? - and who told your friend? -

It is possible this refers to Mary Maud Franklin (1857- ca 1941), JW's model and mistress [more]: she had sometimes called herself 'Maud Whistler'. If she was still in Paris (which is not certain) her presence as a second 'Mrs Whistler' was potentially embarassing for JW and Beatrix Whistler (1857-1896), née Beatrice Philip, artist [more]. However, it also seems hardly tactful of JW to remind his son that he had 'no right' to Whistler's name.
