Dear Rose -
The man tells me that Mr Lewis[4] has written to say that something definite must be done - and that I would I go down to him tomorrow? - Of course I shall do nothing of the kind - doubtless this is another plant but I let you know at once - I have finished one picture[5] and sent it off yesterday evening - It goes to Scotland and the dealer assures me he can place it at once - so that I hope to be able to hand you over [p. 2] the 40 pounds I told you of for the Oetzmann[6] business very soon - Meanwhile I am going right on with my work - and in this way hope in a very few weeks to get together quite a sum - Do try hard that my work be not interrupted -

Nocturne: Grey and Silver - Chelsea Embankment, Winter (YMSM 205) was painted about 11 January 1879 when there was ice on the Thames, and it was completely frozen under the bridges. The painting was sent to [Exhibition], Mr White's North British Galleries, Glasgow, 1879, and sold to Alexander Bannatyne Stewart (1836-1880), retail draper, amateur artist, and collector [more]. It was then exhibited for a second time in 18th Exhibition of Works of Modern Artists, Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, Glasgow, 1879.
