Dear Mr Goldschmidt -
You must pray forgive my long silence - but I was for weeks and indeed months obliged to wait patiently the course of events without giving any sign -
I had been given to understand that I should be in a manner officially called upon to exhibit largely at the Berlin "Universal Exhibition[5]" - and therefore it would never have done for me to sign any paper for you -
Now however the [p. 2] time has gone by, and I have not been approached in the manner that I required, and therefore have determined not to exhibit at all at the Berlin Exhibition -
Say to your brother[6] however with my kindest regards, that if he likes, he might well send the "Nocturne[7]" to Münich[8] for Exhibition when the time comes -
I will let you know -
With many thanks for your trouble,
Very faithfully Yours -
J McN. Whistler
