21, CHEYNE WALK,
Dear Mr Goldschmidt -
You must pray forgive my long silence - but I was for weeks and indeed months obliged to wait patiently the course of events without giving any sign -
I had been given to understand that I should be in a manner officially called upon to exhibit largely at the Berlin "Universal Exhibition" - and therefore it would never have done for me to sign any paper for you -
Now however the [p. 2] time has gone by, and I have not been approached in the manner that I required, and therefore have determined not to exhibit at all at the Berlin Exhibition -
I will let you know -
With many thanks for your trouble,
Very faithfully Yours -
J McN. Whistler
1. [January/May 1891]
Dated by address and reference to exhibitions (see below).
5. Berlin "Universal Exhibition
[National Art Exhibition], Berlin, 1891. It was announced later in the year that 'The jury of the National Art Exhibition in Berlin have awarded Messrs Shannon, Stanhope, Forbes and Waterhouse large gold medals' (Art Journal, 1891, p. 288).
It was not exhibited at this time as far as is known, although JW did exhibit at Kϋnstler-Genossenschaft, Munich, 1891, and 6th Internationale Kunst-Austellung, Munich, 1892, which opened on 1 June 1892.
