33. Rue de Tournon. Paris

Dear Mrs Alexander -

How very exceedingly kind and nice of you to have taken so much trouble[3] for me! -

I am highly gratified and very grateful - and fancy that I may be enabled to do what I wish to accomplish with what you have sent me -

These "inanities" you must remember really represent the true opinion of a People - and I believe I rarely forget -

Also[4] it is but right that the young lady[5], as will her Painter, should have her revenge -

Grau[6] has had orders to thoroughly [p. 2] clean and regild the frame - and after wards, if you wish it, I will with great pleasure repaint the ornament upon it -

The picture[7] itself ought to have a fine photograph one of these days - and on my return I must talk to you about it -

I do wish you would persuade Mr Alexander[8] to have one of the new frames for the Nocturne[9] - it would cost very little - Grau's charges are very moderate - and you have no idea, (unless you have seen Mr Graham Robertson's[10] "Valparaiso[11]" -) how greatly it adds to the picture's "state"!

Mr Robertson would be delighted to show you his picture - do go and see it -

23. Rutland Gate -

With kindest regards and a thousand thanks,
Always sincerely Yours

J McN. Whistler

Do kindly tell me by return of post, if the enclosed on page with illustration, is an Extract from "The Artist"[12]? That is what you seem to say on the next page - for the quotation under it is evidently from the Standard -

Again forgive this continued trouble!

Have you nothing from the Times?
