My dear Cowan -
I really am very glad about the Venice[3] pictu matter - It is very nice of you to lend them - and as to the Scottish Academy[4] do not let that interfere for a moment! Insist upon the pictures being given up for the Venice exhibition which is most[5] important.
I wish I could give you the exact date of its opening, but naturally I cannot put my hand on it -
Of the importance of the [p. 2] Exhibition in Venice, as compared with others you will judge when you see the official letter I shall show you on your visit to Paris /
I send the acknowledgement of the check which I most inexcusably forgot, & you will forgive - ? - Who knows. I may perhaps see you all[6] in Rome!
With kindest regards, Always sincerely

In early January, JW first expressed a wish to travel there: ' I wish enough I could go down to Italy with you!' (see JW to J. J. Cowan, #00728). He travelled to Italy in March 1899 for the wedding of William Heinemann (1863-1920), publisher [more] and Magda Stuart Heinemann (m. 1899), née Sindici, pseudonym 'Kassandra Vivaria', writer [more]. His trip included a visit to the Sistine Chapel in Rome. The Cowans travelled to Rome in February 1899 (see J.J. Cowan to JW, #00727).
