James McN. Whistler Esq.
London, England,
Dear Sir,
Since our last letter[3] we have opened the exhibition[4] of your oil paintings, water colors and pastels and are pleased to inform you that they have attracted a great deal of attention & drawn from the press, notices appreciative and otherwise, but mostly appreciative. We send to-day two papers by mail and shall send others from time to time.
We regret to have opened the exhibition before all the pictures arrived, but we were compelled to do so, as Mrs. Whistler's[5] last letter informed us that the balance of the pictures would follow immediately. We at once went to work, recovered and re painted the gallery walls and wood work &c, sparing no pains nor expense to make everything as attractive as [p. 2] possible, had catalogues and cards printed, expecting that in the meantime, the pictures would arrive. It was a great disappointment that they did not, but we had gone so far that it was impossible to retreat, as you can readily see. We have sold twelve of them and shall, we trust, sell many more. In order to stimulate matters, if the pictures are not already shipped will you not kindly ship them at once? The season here will not last much longer and we should have them at once if we are to do anything with them this season. If you have any new etched plates will you please send us one of each, either [p. 3] by mail or with the pictures. The exhibition is, of course, free, as are the Catalogues. Trusting that we may hear from you by return mail,
we are dear Sir,
Yours respectfully,
H. Wunderlich & Co.
Kennedy.
