Dear Mr. Whistler!

We have just received the drawings etc. in good order and hasten to inform you, that we are delighted with the collection^[2], the Watercolors especially are perfect gems and we are confident that you will see very few of them again, unless you cross the ocean.

You have on your list, No. 32, a small painting, Whitstable^[3], marked 1000. guineas. is this not a mistake?

We hope that the balance of the pictures is now on the way and that we shall be able to open the exhibition early next month.

Shall send you a checque [sic] for the 3 etchings^[4] received a few days ago, by next mail.

This was for JW's first one-man exhibition in America, 'Notes' - 'Harmonies' - 'Nocturnes', H. Wunderlich and Co., New York, 1889. Sales were not as good as hoped, but many American collectors had their first opportunity to see JW's work in bulk. For instance, a watercolour, Grey and Silver - Liverpool (M.913), formed the foundation of the huge collection amassed by Charles Lang Freer (1856-1919), industrialist, collector and founder of the Freer Gallery of Art [more].

3.  Whitstable
Blue and Green: Whitstable (YMSM 369). As far as is known it was not sold.

4.  3 etchings
Grand Place, Brussels (K.362), Woods's Fruit-Shop (K.265), and either Windsor (Memorial) (K.329) or Windsor, No.2 (K.330). The sale is recorded in a bill and letter to Wunderlich on 31 December 1888 (#03517, #13054).
