Dear Tom
Enclosed is a strip from the Times[3] which speaks of Jim Whistlers Picture The Friends[4] he has shown at an Exhibition[5] -
The Criticism of The Times Critique is perhaps as Correct as can be had & you will see that he Places Jim at the Head of the list in an Exhibition in which there are over a Thousand Paintings & by the Best Modern artists.
I have seen Jim's Picture & it strikes me as it Strikes everyone as being devlish [sic] good[.] I was at The Exhibition to day and [p. 2] watched for a long time the effect it had on Passers By, and with scar[ce]ly an exception, it was very [particularly?] remarked -
As Jim thinks of going to America to practice his Art before long, it might give him a lift there if some little notice was taken by some American Paper of the Criticism of The Times as enclosed; if you think it worth while & propper [sic], Latrobe[6] I am sure would be pleased to write a few lines for the American[7] giving Jim a Creditable notice -
Your affect Brother
