Dear Mr Whistler
Enclosed is a final proof of the "Balcony[2]", and a proof of "Miss Corder[3]", of which the face needs to be simplified and flattened. This latter retouche[4] is now being done.
These engravings are, alas, far from perfection; I am grieved to say so; but at the same time I hope that you will not find them unintelligent and utterly to be condemned. Your works are terribly difficult to engrave.
Will you kindly write me a line to say whether you are satisfied with our efforts? Will you also tell me what I am to do with the original picture of the Balcony? Is it to be returned to you at London or do you intend to send it to the Univ. Expos.[5]?
