My dear Sir,
I cannot refrain from telling you, confidentially and regretfully, that hard conditions as to the length of my notice of the Venice Pastels[3] deprived me of nearly all the pleasure I should have had in seeing it in print. After having had my Ms set up, and when I had the proof before me, it was intimated that the only chance of its finding a place in this day's paper would be afforded by my cutting it down to about a third [p. 2] of its already inadequate length. I thought it best to perform the operation, and did the deed reluctantly enough. Pray accept this explanation of the scant justice which I have been able to render these fascinating and delicious bits of colour.
