2. 'List of Subscribers to Traer Funeral'
Written at right angles in upper right-hand corner of sheet, possibly in the hand of Beatrix Whistler (1857-1896), née Beatrice Philip, artist [more]. In April 1867, JW quarrelled with his brother-in-law Francis Seymour Haden (1818-1910), surgeon and etcher, JW's brother-in-law [more], over Haden's treatment of James Reeves Traer (ca 1834 - d.1867), partner in F. S. Haden's medical practice [more] (#01914, #01915, #01917, #05848, #05849, #05850, #06994-#06996, #12332). During March and April, JW and his brother William were in Paris, where JW's works were on view in the American section of the Paris Exposition. James Traer was also in Paris. On 23 April, Traer died suddenly of alcohol related causes. Haden arranged for Traer's burial at the Père Lachaise in Paris with what JW and his brother William regarded as unseemly haste. A violent quarrel arose between the brothers-in-law in a Paris café and Haden was allegedly pushed by JW through a plate glass window. Soon afterwards, the two brothers made arrangements to have Traer's body returned to Ellen Traer (b. ca 1837), J. R. Traer's sister [more] in England for reburial, assisted by George Aloysius Lucas (1824-1909), art dealer in Paris [more], and a list of subscribers.
