Dear Sirs.
I have despatched to you to-day 2 cases. The larger contains 1 Picture A Nocturne in Blue & Gold (Bognor) by J. McN. Whistler valued at £350 & insured for that sum at Lloyds.
The Smaller case contains 1 Picture A Nocturne in Grey & Gold (Snow Piece) by J. McN. Whistler valued at £350[4] & insured for that sum at Lloyds.
The Policies for above insurances you sent to me last week - are dated 18th April 1888[.] In these Policies I note that the time for the detention at Paris and Munich respectively is limited to three months. I do not know how long these pictures may be detained at Paris or Munich - but I forward them to you on the distinct understanding that you will personally be responsible to me for renewal of the Policies if the pictures are detained beyond the three months, & failing your undertaking to so become responsible that you return the pictures to me forthwith.
Awaiting your confirmation of this understanding
I am Dear Si[r]
Yours faithfully
Alfred Chapman

Alfred Chapman (1839-1917), engineer and collector [more].
2. Dowdeswell & Dowdeswells
JW's dealers Dowdeswell & Dowdeswell. Chapman had agreed to lend Nocturne: Blue and Silver - Bognor (YMSM 100) to the Exposition, Galerie Durand-Ruel, Paris, 1888. However, there seems to have been some difficulty arranging insurance cover whilst the picture and another work, Nocturne: Grey and Gold - Chelsea Snow (YMSM 174), bound for Munich - were in transit. The picture was eventually sent via Dowdeswell's and insured with Lloyd's for £350. See A. Chapman to JW, #00578, #00579, #00580 and letter draft, JW to A. Chapman, #02229, A. Chapman to Dowdeswells,' #00583.

Copy written for JW by Dowdeswells. It appears on the same sheet as #13545 (Dowdeswell & Dowdeswells to JW, 28 April 1888), which introduces this letter to JW.
