Dear Mr Whistler,
I have returned from Glasgow rather worried for up to the present our expedition has met with very little response
Business is so bad there that people will hardly even come to look & our visitors have been mostly "artists & poor relations".
I shall return to Scotland in about [p. 2] a week in the hope of getting some result of a favourable kind.
Doubtless you have seen the cuttings about our show. We took the 'Little White Girl[2]', the 'Violet & Blue[3]' & a Nocturne[4][.] But at present no serious offers have been made for any. One bold man offered to exchange a lot of rubbish for the White Girl - an Alma Tadema[5] amongst them, but we declined.
I cannot understand about the Water Colour[6] for it has not yet come from Paris. I am writing to the Boul[evar]d tonight.
[p. 3] I should be glad to have the larger Sea piece if you will send it, for it would give us reason to call the possible people together again & it might wake us up.
We need it badly!
The White Girl made a great sensation in Glasgow & the whole show was rather interesting
On Dec. 2d we open our newly constructed gallery here with a show of McColls[7] and Charles Conders[8] work. [p. 4] Our rooms are much improved with large alterations which have been in progress for 2 months -
Please do not blow me up for bad business or I shall lose heart altogether!
