Dear Jim

Dicksee & Co[2] who live or rather office at Rose & Crown Yard - not Crown Court St James - write me that they can only receive pictures for the Munich Exhibition[3] & that they can not give me a policy of Insurance[4] for any picture I send them for that Exhibition

They also give me a circular respecting this Exhibition - by which I see that if the picture - "Snow picture" - [p. 2] were sent off by Wednesday next which is the earliest date it could be despatched to London it could not possibly reach Munich in anything like time to be received -

Messrs Dicksee say they know nothing about the Paris Exhibition[5] - probably they have never been there -

We regret your absence today from Brighton where snow & sunshine are playing a game of cache cache[6] - I go to Austin Friars tomorrow morning & north in the evening or next day according to circumstances.

My wife[7] wishes me to remember her kindly to you

Believe me
yours faithfully

Alfred Chapman

Notes:

1.  James Alfred Chapman
Alfred Chapman (1839-1917), engineer and collector [more]. See also J. A. Chapman to JW, #00579; #00580; #00582 and J. A. Chapman to Dowdeswells', #00581.

2.  Dicksee & Co
Listed in the London Post Office Directory as 'Fine Art Agents, Packers and Conveyancers.'

3.  Munich Exhibition
The 3rd Internationale Kunst-Austellung, Munich, 1888 which opened in July. JW sent a large group of works - thirteen oils, twenty watercolours, seven pastels and thirty etchings. Chapman had agreed to lend Nocturne: Grey and Gold - Chelsea Snow (YMSM 174) to the exhibition (cat. no. 57). The other oils included Arrangement in Black: La Dame au brodequin jaune - Portrait of Lady Archibald Campbell (YMSM 242) and Harmony in Grey and Green: Miss Cicely Alexander (YMSM 129).

4.  Insurance
The picture was eventually sent via JW's dealers Dowdeswell & Dowdeswell and insured with Lloyd's for £350. See J. A. Chapman to Dowdeswells's, #00582.

5.  Paris Exhibition
After the sixth Exposition Internationale de Peinture et de Sculpture, Galerie Georges Petit, Paris, 1887 (which included works by JW), Claude Monet (1840-1926), artist [more], planned a seventh exhibition to open in May 1888 but Monet's relationship with Petit deteriorated badly (see C. Monet to JW, #04089). The exhibition eventually opened in May at the Exposition, Galerie Durand-Ruel, Paris, 1888. Chapman also agreed to lend Nocturne: Blue and Silver - Bognor (YMSM 100) (referred to under the title Nocturne in Blue and Gold (Bognor)). See #00582. However, it seems only to have gone to the Paris exhibition as it does not appear in the Munich catalogue.

6.  cache cache
Fr., hide-and-seek.

7.  My wife
Mrs Alfred Chapman, wife of the collector [more].
