J'ai reçu avec grand plaisir ta bonne lettre[4]. Elle me prouve que tu es bien l'esprit sérieux, ferme, étranger à toute mesquinerie, qui m'a plu dès le jour où je t'ai vu pour la première fois. Ta façon de juger le sot incident relatif à l'article de Verhaeren sur Khnopff [5] est tout à fait conforme à ma manière de voir, et je suis heureux qu'il en soit ainsi.
Je prends note des deux artistes anglais dont tu me parles. Les invitations, arrêtées en Assemblée des XX, sont parties depuis la semaine dernière et plusieurs réponses me sont déjà parvenues. Mais il est vraisem-[p. 2]blable que tous n'accepteront pas. Je proposerai alors tes deux candidats aux camarades.
Quant à Whistler, mon cher ami, tu sais que j'admire l'artiste et que j'aime beaucoup l'homme. Je ne fais qu'une objection à son admission, et cette objection, tu la connais: il y a longtemps que je l'ai [sic] opposée à son élection, de même qu'à celle de Rodin ou de Raffaelli[6]. C'est qu'il est étranger et qu'il habite à l'étranger.
Je serai très-heureux et très-honoré de voir entrer Whistler dans notre association si les XX décident qu'il y a lieu de passer outre à la question de nationalité. Mais j'avoue que je [p. 3] préférerais beaucoup qu'on s'abstînt d'élire actuellement les deux membres dont la place est vacante et qu'on attendît le moment où se révélera quelque talent en Belgique, parmi ces jeunes artistes. C'est un moyen de forcer ces jeunes à travailler: rien de plus stimulant pour leur activité que cette récompense éventuelle d'entrer aux XX. Oui, mon cher! Et je pense dès à présent que Fernand Dubois[7] sera d'ici à deux ans un médailleur de grand talent qu'il serait fâcheux de ne pouvoir recruter, si nous avions fermé toute issue par ces grands noms de Whistler et de Rodin.

I was delighted to receive your nice letter. It shows that you are still a serious soul, stranger to all meanness, which pleased me from the day when I saw you for the first time. Your way of judging the stupid incident relating to Verhaeren's article on Knopff is entirely in accord with my view, and I am happy that it is so.
I take note of the two English artists of whom you speak. The invitations, agreed by the Assembly of Les XX, went off last week and several replies have already arrived. But it is likely that not all will accept - I will therefore propose your two candidates to my comrades.
As for Whistler, my dear friend, you know that I admire the artist, and that I am very fond of the man. I have only one objection to his admission, and you know what that is. I have long been opposed to his election as with that of Rodin or Raffaelli. It is that he is a foreigner and lives abroad.
I would be very happy and very honoured to see Whistler join our association if the XX decide to set aside the question of nationality but I admit that [p. 3] I would greatly prefer that we did not at present elect members for the two vacancies, and that one should wait until some new talent reveals itself in Belgium among the young artists. This is one way to force the young to work. Nothing could be more stimulating for their activity than this eventual reward of entering Les XX. Yes, my dear friend! And I think at the moment that Fernand Dubois will in two years be a very talented medallist whom it would be unfortunate not to be able to recruit if we had settled the matter by these big names of Whistler and Rodin.

The heading is a design with 'LES XX' in a square, with a vertical rectangle overlapping on the right side, reading 'BRUXELLES'.

This letter has not been located. JW does refer to having written to Maus about arrangements for exhibitions. He exhibited again with the society in [Exhibition], Société des XX (Vingts), Brussels, 1888.
5. l'article de Verhaeren sur Khnopff
Émile Verhaeren (1855-1916), poet and art critic [more], was a close friend of Fernand Khnopff (1858-1921), painter, sculptor, designer and writer [more]. He stressed Khnopff's modernism in his article, defining Symbolism as, 'Un recul formidable de l'imagination moderne vers le passé, une enquête scientifique énorme et des passions inédites vers un surnaturel vague et encore indéfini nous ont poussé à incarner notre rêve et peut-être notre tremblement devant un nouvel inconnu dans un symbolisme étrange qui traduit l'âme contemporaine comme le symbolisme antique interprétait l'âme d'autrefois.
