2 Lindsey Houses. Chelsea -

My dear Lady Romilly -

I have received your kind note^[3] and shall be delighted to show you my paintings^[4] - Either friday or saturday afternoon if equally convenient to you would be better perhaps than tomorrow when my work is to be unusually late -

I remember with the greatest pleasure your [p. 2] visit to my Gallery^[5] and am now very much gratified that at a time when your moments are so few you still make it possible to call -

JW lived in 2 Lindsey Row from February 1867 to June 1878, and some letters between August 1871 and October 1876 were written as from 'Lindsey Houses'. The reference to JW's 'Gallery' suggests a date after his solo exhibition at the Flemish Gallery in June 1874 (see below). A letter mentioning Lady Romilly, written by JW to Cyril Flower, also suggests a date of late 1874 or early 1875 (#01621).

The exhibits included Harmony in Grey and Green: Miss Cicely Alexander (YMSM 129), and Arrangement in Grey and Black, No. 2: Portrait of Thomas Carlyle (YMSM 137), cat. nos. 5 and 6 respectively. The latter was still in JW's possession.
