Dear Sirs
I much regret that I cannot comply with your request to allow my picture "Valparaiso[4]" by Mr Whistler to go to the Chicago Exhibition.
During the short time I have owned it I have already lent it to Exhibitions at Paris and Munich[5] as well as to your own collection[6] of Mr Whistler's work & I [p. 2] feel that I cannot now part with it again for so long a space of time.
I regret extremely being unable to comply with any request of Mr Whistler's or of your own - but the picture is a very great favourite of mine, which must be my excuse.
I remain
Truly your's
W. Graham Robertson
