Dear Mr Whistler
As yet I have no word of the picture[3] coming from Munich. I thought I should have had it ere this.
I have been thinking over our arrangement about sharing the profit on this picture & there is one thing that stands in the way of this (that is to say for the sale here) in that nearly all my transactions are with people who have already collections of pictures & nearly all my transactions necessitate my taking other pictures in exchange so that you see [it] becomes at [p. 2] once slightly complicated as you will see et "l'on n'en finit jamais[4]"
If agreeable to you I would rather send you say £100. now, & so the thing would be at an end.
By the way did you think of having some of my Japanese pictures. I would be delighted of course to take a pastel[5] in exchange at say the same price as last but this of course only as you please.
With kindest regards.
Yours Sincerely
Alex Reid.

Notes:
1. Alexander Reid
Alexander Reid (1854-1936), Glasgow dealer [more].
2. ALS
'Reid' is written in the top left corner of p. 1, at right angles to the text.
3. picture
Arrangement in Black and Brown: The Fur Jacket (YMSM 181) from the 6th Internationale Kunst-Austellung, Munich, 1892.
4. l'on n'en finit jamais
Fr., and there would be no end to it.
5. pastel
There is no record of JW exchanging a pastel for any oriental art, nor any other reference to buying such work from Reid. However, Reid undoubtedly helped create some major collections, like that of William Burrell (1861-1958), ship-owner and collector [more].
