17th Aug 1892 -
Dear Mr Whistler.
I have just got back from Arran (where I had Mr Collie spending a few days with me) & find your letter awaiting me. You rather mistake
your my meaning I think.
It is not at all impossible for me to send you the balance & I therefore herewith enclose it. What I meant was that possibly you simply were going to put the amount in to your Bankers hands & draw from it as you required it in which case it would have been just as easy to draw from me. I would have [p. 2] been quite willing to enter into your alternate arrangement only I think the chances of sale within the next few months almost nil in fact I do not intend showing the picture before October at soonest. I had already seen your correspondence in the National Observer
Poor Mr B. K must feel as charmingly small as he looks
I trust our relations may never change so far that I have to come under the lash of your pen. They certainly deserve it all but what do you intend about Chicago? Is there to be a "Whistler section"?
& with kindest regards to yourself & Mrs Whistler, believe me
