10th August 1892

Dear Mr Whistler.

I am in receipt of your note informing me that the Lady Archibald[2] is my property & I can assure you that I feel a creature of no small importance now that I am the lucky possessor of three of (I feel sure) your immortal works[3].

I would always regret though if any external pressure had made you part with this last picture, to me at a price less than you in the circumstances thought I ought to pay for it.

I intended asking you in my last letter where the picture at present is & how soon I [p. 2] could have it here.

I thought that possibly it might be in Munich[4]?

Also I intended saying that if it were all the same to you I would prefer paying only the half of the price just now (as I am lying out of several thousands just now) & the balance early in October. but only if that suits you perfectly regarding which you might kindly let me know per return. In case you may be in want of money now I enclose herewith cheque for £200. for which you will get the highest rate of exchange at 23 Boulevard des Italiens (Jordaan Cohen & Wemmick) -

In haste
Your's most sincerely

Alex Reid
