Cher Maitre,
I am grieved to have missed you - I was taken ill shortly after writing & left Paris as fast as I could. From your silence I thought that you were away.
At Brussels I was laid up & got home a stone lighter and a shade greyer on Wednesday.
What shall I do re that refractory woman[3]? Will you write first - or shall I call with a letter from you? I am ready to face a battery for the sake of the picture[4].
Here I see nothing new - but in good sooth - I've not been able to go out much.
The Galleries are approach[p. 2]ing completion & look very well.
Pray remember me very cordially to your wife[5] & believe me, Cher Maître
Yrs always
