2. Letter ... England
This note is written in JW's hand in red ink.
Phillip purchased JW's painting At the Piano (YMSM 24) for £30 after it was exhibited in 92nd Exhibition of the Royal Academy of Arts, Royal Academy, London, 1860. The painting had been very well received; Charles Lock Eastlake (1793-1865), President of the Academy of Fine Arts [more], told the Duchess of Sutherland that it was the best painting in the exhibition.
