54, GEORGE SQUARE,
GLASGOW.

10th Feby 1899

Dear Mr Whistler,

I wrote you about a fortnight ago saying that I should be glad to lend the 'Princess[2]' to the Venice Exhibition[3] and I hope you received my letter all right.

I now write you about [p. 2] another matter. The Lord Provost[4] of Glasgow who is also Lord Lieutenant of the County and who holds office for three years is, on retiral, presented by the City Corporation with his portrait - or rather the portrait is preserved in the Corporation Galleries and a replica is presented to the Lord Provost. The present Lord Provost Sir David Richmond is, like many others here, a great [p. 3] admirer of your work and as he is a friend of mine I have been asked to write to enquire if you would care to paint the portrait - full length - along with a replica and in the event of your undertaking the Commission what your charge would be

I hope you are keeping well and with kind regards

I remain
Yours sincerely

Wm Burrell

Jas MacNeill Whistler Esq
Paris.
