'Desire to[3] acquire my etchings by the Director of the Royal Galleries in Holland'
26. Eaton Square
Friday, Janry 12th
Dear Sir,
My father[4], Director of the Royal Picture Galleries in Holland, is anxious to possess a sample of your etchings[5].
[p. 2] Not knowing where they are to be had, I take the liberty to address myself to you, with the request that you will be kind enough to let me know the name of the publisher [p. 3] where I can see them.
I asked Mr Fred: Leighton[6] about it, but he could not tell me. -
If I can be of any use to you in Holland [p. 4] I shall be most happy to put my services at your disposal. -
Believe me,
Dear Sir,
Sincerely yrs
A. Mazel.
Councillor & 1t Secretary of the Netherland Legation

Notes:
1. 12 January [1872 ]
12 January was a Friday in 1866, 1872 and 1877. The watermark 'JOYNSON / 1864' on the paper makes 1866 a possibility, and the reference to Mazel's father as Director (he retired in 1874) suggests either 1866 or 1872. The reference to JW's etchings, however, suggests the later date (1872) as most likely (see below). Leighton, here referred to as 'Mr', was not knighted until 1878.
2. A. Mazel
A. Mazel, son of J. Z. Mazel, Director of the Mauritshuis [more].
3. Desire to ... Holland
This sentence is written in red ink by JW up the left margin of p. 1.
4. father
Jan-Zacharie Mazel (1792-1884), painter and etcher, Director of the Royal Picture Gallery, Mauritshuis [more].
5. etchings
It is possible this refers to A Series of Sixteen Etchings of Scenes on the Thames, 1871 (the 'Thames Set') (K.38-44, 46, 52, 66, 68, 71, 74-76, 95) (excat 4), published by F. S. Ellis in 1871. JW had exhibited a selection in Tentoonstelling van Kunstwerken van Levende Meesters, Hague School of Art, Princessegracht, The Hague, 1863.
6. Mr Fred: Leighton
Frederic Leighton (1830-1896), painter and sculptor [more].
