Nous avons l'honneur de vous faire savoir, qu'au nombre d'une centaine environ nous avons pris la résolution de nous retirer de la "Société des Artistes de Munich[2]" et de fonder une association nouvelle: nous venons nous adresser à vous au nom du Comité formé pour mettre ce projet à exécution.
Les motifs qui ont dicté notre conduite sont de deux sortes:
d'un côté dans la société actuelle le nombre des artistes qui ne produisent pas menaçe de plus en plus d'ecraser le nombre de ceux qui produisent, au [p. 2] détriment de tous les interêts artistiques; -
d'un autre côté les modifications apportées aux Statuts par la dernière assemblée générale restreignent à notre avis les facilités accordées aux exposants étrangers et sont de nature à compromettre le sort des expositions annuelles de Munich, en ce qui concerne du moins leur caractère international.
La concurrence libre entre tous les pays constituant au contraire un des points essentiels de notre programme, nous venons vous prier au nom du Comité, de nous aider à réaliser notre projet artistique, en acceptant d'entrer dans notre association avec le titre de
"Membre correspondant."
[p. 3] Nous ajoutons bien que nos statuts ne soient pas encore rédigés, qu'aucune contribution pecuniaire ne sera exigée des membres étrangers comme condition d'entrée dans notre association et qu'aucun jury ne leur sera imposé.
Si vous accordez votre adhésion, vous ne compromettre en aucune façon votre participation à l'Exposition internationale[3] qui aura lieu cette année à Munich.
En vous demandant de vouloir bien nous faire connaître votre décision, nous vous prions au nom du Comité formé pour constituer une nouvelle société artistique, d'agréer l'assurance de notre haute considération.

Dear Sir
We have the honour to inform you, that in the name of approximately a hundred people we have resolved to resign from the "Society of Artists in Munich" and to establish a new association; we are therefore writing to you in the name of the Committee formed to put this plan into execution.
The causes which have given rise to our action are of two kinds:
on one hand in the current society the number of artists who are not working is more and more in danger of overwhelming those who are, to the [p. 2] detriment of all artistic interests; -
on the other hand the modifications made to the Constitution by the last general meeting in our opinion restrict the facilities available to foreign exhibitors and are of a kind which could compromise the fate of the annual exhibitions in Munich, at least as far as their international character is concerned.
Since free competition between all the member countries is on the contrary one of the essential points of our programme, we hereby beg you in the name of the Committee, to help us to realise our artistic aim, by agreeing to enter our association with the title of "correspondent Member".
[p. 3] We would add that although our constitution is not already established, no pecuniary contribution is required from foreign members as a condition of entry into our association and no jury will be imposed on them.
If you agree to join, you will not compromise in any way your participation in the international Exhibition which will take place this year in Munich.
Asking you to be kind enough to make your decision known to us, we beg you in the name of the Committee formed to establish a new artistic society to accept our highest regards.

The signatories are the president and chief artists involved in the Munich Secession. They had just seceded from the Münchner Künstlergenossenschaft, the largest professional society of artists, in order to found their own exhibition society.

The first Secessionist exhibition took place in 1893.
