The Benedick.
Dear Mr Whistler.
In response to your very kind letter[3] I can tell you that the pictures for the Munich Exhibition[4] must be in Munich by May 1st 92. The exhibition lasts until Oct 1st. On my way back to Munich I will submit to you a plan Mr Stanford White[5], the architect has made for our room and I am sure it will please you. I have been very fortunate in collecting some very good things by Dewing[6], Thayer[7], Weir[8], Iness[9], Lundley[10] and a most complete lot of work by St Gaudens[11]. The latter I am sure will be a great surprise to all.
[p. 2] I feel very confident now that all will turn out well and that at last a good exhibition of american men will be made. Of course we are all looking forward to you to help us with your work. The pictures are all done by men who believe in Art for Arts sake and with your work at the head of this collection, I am sure the exhibit will make a strong and lasting hit.
I leave New York on March 16th and will make it my duty to call on you as soon as I arrive.
Yours very truly
Charles Fred Ulrich.
