Dear Sir:
I am informed by the Central Committee for the International Art Exhibition[2] about to be held here, that they have sent you a "personal invitation" to contribute to the said exhibition, which invitation, as I learn from Mr Abbey[3], has been duly received. On behalf of the American Committee appointed here for the purpose of arranging the American Department, I would [p. 2] therefore respectfully request you to inform me, whether you intend contributing to the Exhibition, and whether you will allow your works to be placed in the American Department, or whether you would prefer to give the Central Committee the disposal of the same?

2. International Art Exhibition
The 3rd Internationale Kunst-Austellung, Munich, 1888 opened in July. JW sent a large group of works - thirteen oils, twenty watercolours, seven pastels and thirty etchings. Amongst the oils was Arrangement in Black: La Dame au brodequin jaune - Portrait of Lady Archibald Campbell (YMSM 242). He was awarded a second-class medal by the exhibition committee.
